As I got older, my sleep quietly got worse. Not in a dramatic, clinical way. More like a slow drift. Harder to wind down at night. More likely to surface at 2am for no apparent reason. Less likely to feel genuinely rested in the morning regardless of how many hours I logged.
I wasn't deficient in sleep exactly. I was deficient in quality sleep. And after learning that up to 75% of adults are low in magnesium, often linked to high cortisol, poor sleep onset, and that wired-but-tired feeling, I finally started paying attention to what was actually in the supplements I was taking.
Melatonin was the first thing I cut. It works short-term, but it's not designed for nightly use, and the grogginess I was waking up with wasn't worth the 45 minutes of faster sleep onset. What I wanted was something that worked with my body's chemistry rather than overriding it.
I tested six magnesium-based sleep supplements over three weeks each, rotating through my normal nighttime routine one product at a time. I tracked sleep onset, overnight wake-ups, morning clarity, taste, and ingredient quality. Here's what I found.

Rather than one overall impression, I scored each product across five dimensions:
1. Sleep onset β How noticeably did it help me fall asleep, and how quickly?
2. Sleep quality β Did I wake up overnight? Did I hit deeper sleep?
3. Morning clarity β How did I feel within the first hour of waking?
4. Taste and ritual β Would I actually look forward to taking this every night?
5. Ingredient quality β Magnesium form, dosage, additional compounds, absence of melatonin and artificial fillers.

The most complete formula in this test. MoonBrew does almost everything right. They use the best two forms of magensium for sleep. Then they add calming ingredients like l-theanine and passionflower. Plus, it genuinely tastes amazing. If you only try one product from this list, this is it.
Magnesium glycinate β the most bioavailable form for sleep and cortisol reductionMelatonin-free β designed for nightly use without dependencyEight flavors with regular new additionsSugar-free, low-calorie β guilt-free nighttime ritualShared by 2,000+ clinicians on FrontrowMDThird-party tested and screened for heavy metals60-day money back guaranteeMoonBrew's edge over everything else I tested comes down to one thing: it's designed for the long game. Most sleep supplements aren't made for nightly use. But MoonBrew? It's perfect for a lifetime of sleep without side effects or safety concerns.
All-natural ingredients like l-theanine, reishi, GABA, and L-tryptophan cause fast relaxation and stress relief, while the magensium starts building up in your body to reduce cortisol.
The Hot Cocoa flavor is a perfect addition to my nightly ritual. There's just something about a warm drink before bed that puts me into instant-relax mode.
By week two I was noticeably falling asleep faster. By week three the 2am wake-ups had largely stopped. And the best part? I wake up every morning feeling fantastic...not drowsy.

One thing I hate about MoonBrew is that they sell out too fast. That's why I stock up by buying a 3-pack, which also means I get all three containers for 40% off.
But the main complaint I've seen is that it takes a while to really work. Sure, the first night, you'll probably have better sleep because of the calming blend, but it really takes about 2 weeks to get the full benefits. That can be frustrating for some people.

The fastest-acting formula I tested. If stress and anxiety are the primary reason you can't wind down, Magnesi-Om's triple magnesium blend plus L-theanine works noticeably quickly. The big problem? It uses magensium citrate...which can cause gut problems.
Triple magnesium blend β three forms for fuller absorptionL-theanine adds calm focus without sedationfast relaxation effectMixes easily in water or juiceOn evenings when I was stressed from writing these reviews, Magnesi-Om worked faster than anything else. Within 20β30 minutes I felt the cortisol edge soften. The triple magnesium blend (three different forms rather than one) seems to account for the speed.
Plus, it contains l-theanine like MoonBrew, which is great for stress relief and cognition. This blend also taste decent and mixes easily into water or juice.

The melatonin content, even trace amounts, makes me hesitant to recommend this for strict nightly use. If you're using it once a week, it's excellent. As a daily supplement, I'd opt for MoonBrew.
β
But there's another big problem: magnesium citrate It isn't a great magnesium for sleep and is also most commonly used as a laxative. That means you might need to poop in the middle of the night, or have to deal with gas, bloating, discomfort, or even diarrhea.

The most indulgent formula in this test. Beam Dream's brownie batter and chocolate flavors are genuinely dessert-level, and the sleep support is real. But the meltaonin causes nightmares and drowsy mornings. Plus, it's very expensive for 30 servings.
Exceptional chocolate-forward flavorsThird-party testedThe brownie batter flavor is the best-tasting sleep supplement I've ever had. Full stop. On nights when I wanted something that felt like a treat rather than a health intervention, Beam was the pick.
But the positive notes didn't stop with the taste. It also greatly relaxes the body and ingredeints like l-theanine and reishi are great for restoring your sleep, and your brain.

I bought the melatonin version by mistake β there's a non-melatonin version I'd like to retest. The sweetness level can also tip over into heavy territory if you've had a rich meal, which defeats the purpose of a relaxing nighttime ritual.
Also, this formula seems to be really good at relaxing the body, but not so good at calming the mind. Since my mind races at bedtime, it didn't help very much for falling asleep. It was, however, great for staying asleep.

These drink mixes are really easy to take on the go, making them the most convenient option on our list. They also have a great melatonin-free formula with 18 ingredients. The big problem with this product is the price, costing nearly $100 for only 30 drink packs.
Uses magnesium L-threonate, which is one of the 3 best forms for sleepIΒ really like the convenience of these little packets. All you have to do is mix it into water, milk, or really most other drinks. They have a few different flavors to choose from, and all of them taste pretty good. I also like that it contains valerian, which is very calming and fast acting. It helps to wipe out the racing thoughts and chill out the restless body.
The next morning is also great, when compared to melatonin-heavy options. You'll wake up feeling rested, but not drowsy. That's partially because they use magensium L-threonate, which enhances memory, focus, and brain health.

IΒ will not be buying this product ever again for one main reason: it's way too expensive. Even for occasional use, $99 for 30 packs is absurd, when I can get the same amount of MoonBrew for $38.
This formula also causes minor bloating, and is full of ingredients that I'm skeptical do anything. Sure, it contains some great herbs and adaptogens, but also things like citrus bioflavonoids, carrot, grasses, and papaya that probably raise the cost, but not the effectivness.

This product has a super clean formula with two forms of magnesium, stevia, and organic flavors. While it's not specifically designed for sleep, it definitely relaxes the mind and relieves stress. However, it doesn't have the sleep-improving qualities of others on this list.
Natural Vitality Calm does what it's designed to do: lower stress levels and calm the mind. They use Magnesium Glycinate, which is the best for sleep and relaxation, combined with a more highly absorbable form of magnesium citrate. Maybe that's why it doesn't cause bloating like others that contain the same form of magnesium.
It is by far the cheapest option on our list if you are looking for solely magnesium supplementation in a fizzy drink form. The formula is simple, clear, and free of artificial sweeteners or flavors.

While this formula is very cheap, that's for a reason: it doesn't really have any of the other calming or sleep-improving ingredients as the others on our list. Because of that, it's not as effective and takes much longer to start improving your sleep at all.
It also doesn't taste very good. I haven't tried all the flavors, but the two I've tried have a very "fake" or synthetic taste to them.

This product is full of fantastic ingredients like l-theanine, ashwagandha, and one of the best magnesium forms for sleep: magnesium glycinate. However, it's expensive, costing around $40 for only 20 servings. The nasty stevia flavor also shines through the other flavor too much.
They use the right form of magnesium, combine it with ashwagandha and l-theanine, leaves out harsh fillers or artificial sweeteners, and pack it into an easy on-the-go pack. And it definitely works for calming me down. Very good stress-relief formula to help me chill out at night.
It's also third-party tested, made in the USA, and contains vitamin d which I always need more. However, despite all that, there are major downsides that leave it at number 5 on my list.

At first glance, this product does everything right. Until you see how much is costs. It costs more for 20 servings than my favorite, MoonBrew, does for 30.
But it also just didn't really help my sleep as much as I thought it would. The formula looks good, but it only barely helped. While it eased my stress levels, my sleep stayed pretty much the same as without it.

The most complete formula in this test. MoonBrew hits every criterion I care about β the right forms of magnesium, no melatonin, genuinely great taste, and effects that compound meaningfully over consistent use. If you only try one product from this list, this is it.
