I work out hard, but I always noticed other girls made way more progress than I did. You know, the ones with perfect abs, toned legs, and the perfect figure. The difference was that I could never get enough protein in my diet, and I hated every shake I tried. Some tasted like chalk, others made me bloated and sluggish.
I thought they were all the same, but people kept recommending different products telling me, "this one is different." I was skeptical, but I decided to set out on a mission to test all the viral favorites, most recommended powders, and more popular protein powders. Then, I ranked them to find the absolute best protein powder on the market.

Everybody is different with different protein needs, but I wanted to be as objective as possible to find options that work for as many people as possible.Β
So, I looked for protein powders with real food ingredients that taste great, feel great, and aren't full of junk. Β And I especially didnβt want any that made me feel too bloated to workout.
To ensure the best ranking based not only on personal preference, but on objective factors, I tried each powder over the course of several days. This is the process I used:
β

The best and cleanest protein powder I tried. Itβs delicious, made with real-food ingredients, and is free from artificial sweeteners, seed oils, and hydrogenated oils. Plus, since it's beef protein, there's zero bloat or discomfort.
Equip Prime Protein feels like a luxury option. The unflavored option is made with only one ingredient: grass-fed beef protein. Even the flavored versions only add a few more like natural flavors and stevia leaf extract. That means no sugar, no fillers, and no whey. The result is a cleaner feeling protein without any bloating or discomfort.
However, the most surprising thing about Equip for me was the taste. This was the third one I tried, so I was expecting some "off" flavor like the others, but instead it created a creamy and delicious drink that tastes more like dessert than protein. No clumps, beefy taste, or chalkiness.
The fact that it's third-party tested for pesticides and heavy metals is more than just a bonus. I recently read a Harvard Health article that said many protein powders contain toxins, BPA, heavy metals, and other contaminants "with links to cancer and other health conditions." That's why I will always stick with Equip because I know it's safe.
And the best part, you can try it risk-free. If you don't like it, you can get your money back within 90 days.

Since the best price is only available on the official website, you won't be able to pick this up at the store. Luckily, you can subscribe, save money, and make sure you never run out.
But the main issue is that they frequently sell out of their most popular flavors, like chocolate and vanilla. If it's in stock, make sure you grab your favorite.

This protein powder packs 28 grams of protein into a 130-calorie serving, and tastes quite good. The problem is that it also causes bloating and gas because of the whey, which is why it lands at my second favorite despite the clean label.
I love that this option packs 28 grams of protein into a serving that's only 130 calories. Even better, it has a really clean label, that's completely transparent. They even list the exact weight of every ingredient on the label! Love that.
Plus, it's third party tested and comes in a ton of flavors as well. It's a great protein if you don't mind the big downside that holds it back.
β

There are a few things that prevent this protein from beating Equip's beef protein option. First, it feels almost impossible to mix smoothly. It's always clumpy and gritty. However, that's not enough to hurt its ranking.
It's the gut problems that really prevent me from raving about Transparent Labs. It caused me tons of bloating and gas every time I took it. That was enough for me to choose another protein for my daily use.

This is an excellent tasting protein with plenty of collagen to support skin, bones, and joints. It's also naturally flavored and comes in many flavors. However, it does have 180 calories per serving and costs almost $3 per serving.
There's a lot to like about this protein powder. They have tons of great flavors, and it's really delicious and creamy. Plus, they use a combination of whey and collagen, which tends to be easier on the stomach and can support skin, hair, and joints too.
There's no junk, no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and it's flavored with real fruit. Plus, they add cordyceps and reishi mushrooms to promote mental clarity and natural energy. Though some might not like that addition to a protein powder, I thought it was pretty unique.

While this option does have more protein than some, it's also 180 calories per serving, and that's not counting milk (waterworks but isn't as delicious). It's also very expensive, costing $2.99 per serving. The bag only comes with 20 servings at around $60.
Finally, while I didn't have a problem with the cordyceps and reishi, some people prefer their protein to be just protein. Plus, these mushrooms can cause side effects like bloating, nausea, altered blood sugar levels, and more.

This protein has one of the best protein-to-calorie ratios that you'll find, offering 23.3 grams per 100 calories. Unfortunately, it also tastes very bad. Also, for some reason it doesn't come with a scoop, so it's hard to measure easily.
This protein has an amazing calorie to protein ratio, offering 23.3 grams of protein for only 100 calories per serving. It's also really clean, with grass-fed whey protein, stevia, pink salt, and alkalized chocolate. There are no seed oils, artificial sweeteners, or problematic ingredients. Because of that, even though it was whey, the bloat wasn't as terrible as other whey powders.Β

The main thing holding this protein back is the taste. To be honest, it's pretty awful. It's chalky, hard-to-mix, and tastes, "off." Whether the protein to calorie ratio is worth that is up to you.
It also uses whey so it might not be great for those who are sensitive to dairy, but for me I didn't have any issues. One other downside is that it doesn't come with a scoop, so it's hard to measure and easy to get too much or too little.

Truvani is an exceptional option for vegans, offering plenty of plant-based protein in a good-tasting powder. While it can have a gritty texture, the main downside is the price, costing $44.99 for only 18 servings.
I love Truvani for its clean ingredient list, full of only plant-based and certified organic ingredients. There are no additives, artificial sweeteners, or dairy, and it still tastes really good and mixes easily into milk, water, or any other beverage. Honestly, it's the best vegan protein powder I've ever tried, and it's free from problematic ingredients.

There are a couple of major issues I have with this protein. First, the price. It might look like a good deal at $44.99 at first glance, but that's only for 18 servings making it one of the most expensive protein options on our list. To add to that issue is the fact that pea protein made me feel very bloated and gassy, which is a very common experience.

Gainful's Everyday Whey blends fast whey with slow-digesting casein for steady muscle recovery, using only clean, no-artificial-ingredient formulas. The main drawback: it's unflavored, so you'll need to buy separate flavor packets to make it palatable, adding extra cost and steps to your routine.
This protein powder pairs fast-absorbing whey with slow-digesting casein, so you get both an immediate amino acid boost and sustained muscle recovery over time. At 23g of protein per serving, it's solid for daily use, whether post-workout or as a meal add-in. It skips artificial flavors, sweeteners, and dyes, and Gainful runs third-party testing in NSF-certified facilities, so you know exactly what you're putting in your shaker bottle.

Since this powder comes unflavored, you'll need to add Gainful's flavor packets (or your own mix-ins) to make it taste like more than gritty, chalky milk. That adds costs and an extra step to prep. The bag only holds 14 servings, so it runs out faster than larger tubs, meaning more frequent reorders as well as a deceivigly low price. And since it's whey-, it can cause some tummy troubles.

This grass-fed beef protein isolate delivers 21g of dairy-free protein with zero carbs and a stellar collagen-amino profile (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline). It's a clean, minimal-ingredient option for paleo/keto/carnivore diets β but unlike Equip Prime Protein, this powder tastes like gritty beef.
β
Naked is great because it's only two ingredients, which means it has great macros and a simple formula that you can feel comfortable putting into your body. Of course, this means it also doesn't leave you feeling bloated or full either. The container is also more affordable than other brands, which is a major plus, especially for those on a budget. It's also interesting that it's processed in Sweden using mechanical & thermal processes to retain vital nutrients. Does that make it better?Β I'm not sure, but possibly.
β

The main downside to Naked Beef Protein is the taste. They only make an unflavored version, and it has tons of flavor...just not the flavor you want. It's very beefy and earthy. However, if you don't mind that, then the only other thing to consider is that even though it's more affordable, there are only 20 servings each container.

This grass-fed beef protein isolate delivers 20g of dairy-free protein in an affordable jug, costing only $1.67 per serving. They also make a donation for every purchase. However, the stevia taste is way too strong, ruining the actually decent chocolate flavor.
This beef protein isolate hits an easy price point, making it accessible for anyone who wants to add a clean protein boost without overspending. The chocolate flavor is rich and satisfying, and since it's beef-based rather than whey, it digests easily without the bloating some dairy proteins cause. Every purchase also supports a donation program, and the product is third-party tested, so you can trust what's actually in your scoop.

The powder tends to have a dry, slightly gritty texture that doesn't dissolve as smoothly as other proteins, so it can take extra shaking or blending to get a drinkable consistency. The stevia used for sweetness also comes through fairly strong for some palates, giving the chocolate flavor a noticeable aftertaste. Overall, it's not the easiest protein to mix into a smooth shake without a blender or shaker ball and the aftertaste basically ruins it.

At 30g of protein from a single ingredient, this is the most potent protein in the lineup, but it comes at a cost. With no lecithin, sweetener, or flavor to mask it, expect a distinctly meaty taste and a powder that clumps unless you own a blender.
β
There's no arguing with the specs here: 30g of protein per serving is the most in this lineup, sourced from a single ingredient: grass-fed, grass-finished beef isolate from hormone-free European cattle. Nothing else is added, refreshingly free of fillers and sweeteners. It's also naturally rich in the collagen-building aminos glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, so it supports muscle recovery and joint health at the same time.

This is where the single-ingredient purity backfires. With no sunflower lecithin, sweetener, or flavor masking to smooth it out, this powder is genuinely unpleasant to drink straight. It has a strong, unmistakably meaty taste that water or milk alone won't hide, and it clumps badly unless you've got a high-powered blender you want to use every day. Honestly, I can't imagine willingly trying this one again after my test...it's that gross.
