As a fitness girl, I've always done everything to maximize results and stay healthy. Unfortunately, protein is one thing I've always struggled with. I never seemed to get enough protein without eating way too many calories.
So, of course I turned to protein products. Whey made me bloat up like a balloon. That's why I had to find a protein bar that worked for me. That was easier said than done.
No matter what I did, I couldnβt find a great protein bar at the store. Most were packed with too much sugar, tons of whey, not enough protein, or heavily processed ingredients. They made me feel bloated, sluggish, and nauseous.
So, I set out on a mission to find the absolute best clean protein bar on the market. Then, I ranked the top 10 based on ingredients, taste, texture, and protein content.

Everybody is different with different protein needs, but I wanted to be as objective as possible to find options that work for as many people as possible.Β
So, I looked for bars with real food ingredients that are nourishing, taste great, and have nothing artificial. And I especially didnβt want any candy bars disguised as healthy protein.
To ensure the best ranking based not only on personal preference, but on objective factors, I tried each bar over the course of several days. This is the process I used:
β

The best and cleanest protein bar I found. Itβs delicious, made with real-food ingredients, and is free from artificial sweeteners, seed oils, and hydrogenated oils. Plus, with colostrum and beef protein, it offers full-body support.
Equip Prime Bars are among the best-tasting brands I tried, while having the cleanest ingredients of them all. With grass-fed collagen, 20 grams of protein, and real-food ingredients, this bar supports muscle growth, speedy recovery, joint health, and even skin, hair, and nails.Β
I experienced no bloat, and even have a healthier gut because of the added colostrum. They even offer dairy-free versions to ensure gut comfort for those sensitive to lactose.Β
Not only does it taste like a dessert, but it keeps you full longer than other options, because itβs made with actual food. That means fewer cravings, fewer calories, and plenty of nutritional support.Β

My main complaint is that Equip Prime Protein is only available online. That means I have to make sure I order ahead of time, even though the shipping is fast. Actually, I recommend subscribing to save 15%, so you save money and never run out.Β
But that brings me to the other issue: these bars sell out fast, especially the most popular flavors, so I would order while you can. I always keep an extra box lying around just in case.Β

Great option with protein plus prebiotic fiber, without artificial sweeteners or seed oils. Itβs just a little expensive and the texture is too chewy.
I love that Jacob Bars have 20 grams of protein plus 9 grams of dietary fiber, which is great for keeping you full. The fiber also supports gut health (though I prefer the colostrum of Equip Prime Bars).
They also use clean food ingredients, without GMOS, seed oils, or artificial flavors. Thatβs always a great thing.Β
Finally, they have a good protein to calorie ratio. For 20 grams of protein, youβll only get 220 calories.

There are some big issues that are holding Jacob Bar back. First, itβs one of the most expensive bars on the market. Sure, itβs made with great ingredients, but almost $6 per bar is a bit much.
The taste also isnβt very great. Itβs extremely dense and has that chalky taste Iβd prefer to avoid with a daily protein bar. The texture was also very chewy and stuck to my teeth, which is never fun.

Made with only a few whole-food ingredients and comes in a variety of good flavors. Itβs also naturally sweetened and tastes great. Unfortunately, it only has 12g of protein without third-party testing.
I love that RxBars are made with only a few, real-food ingredients.Β They contain ingredients like egg whites, nuts, dates, and sea salt.Β
They also taste quite good, with a variety of different flavors to choose from. The flavor is one of my favorites on this list, even if the texture isnβt great.Β
Finally, they are naturally sweetened, which is always a good thing. The sweetness comes from dates, not refined sugars.

One of the main issues I have with RxBars is the fact that it only contains 12g of protein. For me, thatβs not really enough to close the protein gap.Β
They also stick to your teeth like crazy. Itβs frustrating when eating them, and kind of ruins the experience despite the great taste.Β
Possibly the main downside is that these bars are not third-party tested. Β Even worse, some independent testing has flagged trace amounts of heavy metals in these products.

Uses real food ingredients like peanut butter, honey, and eggs. They are also very clean and high in healthy fats. The problem? They are higher in calories than any other option and only have 15g of protein.
Like other brands in the top half of my list, Perfect Bars use whole food ingredients, like peanut butter, honey, and eggs. They donβt really have any junk in them at all.
They are also naturally sweetened and donβt contain seed oils or hydrogenated oils. Itβs also nice you can find them at retailers.Β
Last but not least, they are packed with dried superfoods, giving them meaningful amounts of Vitamin E, Niacin, Magnesium, and Zinc.

These protein bars are higher in calories than any other on our list, with 330 calories per bar. To make that worse, they only contain 15 grams of protein, so the protein to calorie ratio is way off.Β
These bars also have to be refrigerated, which means itβs hard to take them on the go or toss them into your gym bag. Thatβs not very convenient for a protein bar.Β
These bars are also not third-party tested, which is a bit of a risk. We just donβt know if they are perfectly safe or free from heavy metals or other contaminants.

These are a delicious option that tastes the closest to a candy bar. It also has a good protein to calorie ratio. The issue is that itβs the most heavily processed option on this list.
The main thing to love about Barebells is the taste. These taste just like a candy bar, with a crunchy interior and delicious coating.Β
They also have a great protein to calorie ratio. That means more protein for fewer calories.Β
Plus, there are tons of flavors to choose from, and they are available in Supermarkets like Trader Joes. If you have a big sweet tooth and lots of flavors to satisfy it, this is a good place to start.

While these bars taste fantastic, they donβt really belong on a clean protein list. They are packed with heavily processed ingredients like artificial sweeteners (maltitol, sucralose, acesulfame K) and synthetic binders.
Because of those ingredients and the low fiber content, Barebells might cause bloating and digestive discomfort. They can even disrupt your microbiome.Β
The great taste and good texture isnβt enough to overcome these massive issues with Barebells.

Prima offers grass-fed beef tallow and collagen peptides, which is great for skin, joint, and tendon support. However, it tastes meaty and uses whey concentrate that can cause bloat.
Prima uses grass-fed beef tallow and bovine collagen peptides, providing 9 essential amino acids for skin, joint, and tendon support. It also contains 21 grams of protein, which is a good amount for a bar that tastes pretty good.Β
They are third-party tested, donβt contain artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols, and use clean ingredients. These are definitely above average when checking out the label alone.Β

While the ingredients are great, there are a coupleΒ issues I have with Prima. First, they use whey concentrate, which is pretty heavy on the gut, causing bloating, gas, and sluggishness.Β
Second, the tallow makes them greasy and sticky on the outside. They also melt easier than other options, which is inconvenient for those on the go.Β
Finally, they have a weird beefy or meaty taste. I guess it makes sense, but Equip Prime Bars use beef protein but still taste excellent.Β

Rise is naturally sweetened with honey and doesnβt contain any artificial sweeteners. But, it only has 15g of protein and whey isolate can still cause bloating and discomfort.
These products use very simple, real-food ingredients. Just almonds, honey, whey protein isolate, and carob powder. Itβs one of the few bars with truly minimal ingredients, no artificial flavors, and no sugar alcohols.Β
While whey isnβt always my favorite, these bars use whey protein isolate, which is way easier on digestion than whey concentrate.Β
They are also quite filling, which is great for meal replacement or reducing cravings.Β

At 270 calories with just 15 grams of protein, this protein bar just isnβt as good as the ones at the top of the list.Β
Even though it uses a better form of whey, you might still feel bloating and discomfort after eating one. This is especially concerning for those sensitive to dairy.Β
Another issue is the texture and taste. These bars are extremely sweet, almost overwhelmingly so. Itβs also very dense and chewy, which makes it kind of slow and difficult to eat.Β

Think! Bars are yummy with a low sugar formula, great texture, and plenty of protein. However, outside of protein they donβt offer much due to h heavily processed ingredients, very little fiber, and sugar alcohols.
The best thing about Think! Bars is the low amount of sugar. It's sweetened with Stevia, which some people don't like, but only has 1g of sugar.
They also have a good texture, with the right amount of chewy and crunchy. For a low-sugar and gluten-free formula, thatβs pretty great.Β

While these bars are decent, there are some major issues. First, they use tons of seed oils as the first ingredient, which some evidence suggests can cause inflammation.
The taste struggled because of that same issue. The aftertaste tastes fake and synthetic, which isnβt great for real-food seekers.Β
Unlike other options on this list, they contain very little fiber and plenty of sugar alcohols. That means more digestive discomfort, bloating, and gas.

Aloha bars are vegan and full of organic ingredients without additives. They are also high in fiber, but they only contain 14 grams of protein with too many carbs and calories.
I like that Aloha Bars are plant-based and contain good clean ingredients. They use organic brown-rice and pumpkin-seed protein (plant-based), are vegan, soy-free, dairy-free, Non-GMO, and USDA Organic in many versions.Β
Because of that, they are also high in fiber and low in added sugar. In fact, some flavors have 10 grams of fiber and only 5 grams of added sugar.Β

These bars are low in protein and fairly high in calories. Thatβs not great for maximizing protein for calorie or reaching your protein goals while losing weight.Β
They also have 20-25 grams of carbs, which is much higher than other protein bars. That can potentially mean weight gain, blood sugar spikes, and energy crashes.Β
One thing that makes Aloha one I wonβt come back to is the texture. They are very dry compared to the others on our list, and I really donβt like dry textures, especially with a protein bar.

With 20g of protein, an affordable price, and availability in grocery stores, youβd think these would end up higher on the list. Unfortunately, they use soy protein isolate and tons of processed ingredients that lands them in last place.
The Clif Builders Protein Bar delivers 20g of protein in a plant-based bar. Thatβs better than a few on our list, including some that are more highly ranked.Β
These bars also have a nice satisfying crunch. It has rice puffs that make it crispy, which I love.
These bars are also the cheapest on the list, unforunately there's a reason for that.

Soy protein isolate is a major red flag, especially compared to the other bars we reviewed. This is a heavily processed protein thatβs been stripped of fiber and nutrients.Β
The processing doesnβt stop there either. The ingredient list is full of processed ingredients like can syrup,Β tapioca syrup, and palm kernel oil.
And since it isnβt sweetened with real food ingredients like honey or dates, it offers very little nutritional value outside of sugar. Low fiber can mean bloating and constipation too.Β
